Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Updated: Aug 24, 2019

"Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is"

Today we helped a Little conquer a big fear. As a part of our "Read to Me" theme, one of the stories we explored was The Three Little Pigs. Although there are many versions of this story, there's always the Big Bad Wolf and one of my Littles wasn't having it. On Monday as I gave them the rundown of how our week will go, I realized that something wasn't sitting right with the Little. When I mentioned the story, tears formed and all I heard was, "not the Big Bad Wolf". and "I'm not coming to school ever again". After a long talk about being brave and courage the Little said, "Well if we read that book, I'll just call the police on you" 😂. That didn't bother me. What bothered was that I could feel the fear in the room and it wasn't a good feeling. I shifted gears and remembered I had a wolf costume. I went home took a picture of me dressed as a wolf, returned the next day, and showed the class the picture letting them know that we were going to be the pigs and the Great Good Wolf. After some convincing and other activities revolving around the story, the Little went from being afraid to saying I will be brave for the Great Good Wolf. It wasn't that the Little was afraid of wolves. The word "Bad" is what was making the Little afraid.

This was a learning moment for me also. I thought about how we let what we think make us fearful. When the things we think are too hard for us we let fear take over and put them to the side. When in reality God has given us the power to do everything. The best thing to do is get out of our own way, change our Can'ts into Cans, and don't let fear win!
